Discover the Future of Dental Implants in Palos Verdes

Representation of dental implantsDental implants have become the most preferred and effective solution for treating tooth loss with more than 500,000 placed each year. Often, one of the most appealing factors is the fact they offer over a 95% success rate. However, their success has recently come into question as many need to be replaced due to a bacterial infection in the tissue. Now, new advancements in dental implants in Palos Verdes resolves the issue. Using a new plasma implant coating, pathogens are destroyed to promote the long-term success of the procedure.

Preventing Dental Implant Failure

The leading cause for implant failure involves a bacterial infection, which can also lead to an increased risk for jawbone degeneration. Although the body often accepts the post, the body’s own cellular defense leads to a constant battle with infectious pathogens. Often, the bacteria will triumph, leading to a biological film to develop over the titanium post. Once the post has been compromised, it creates an inflammatory response, leading to bone atrophy.

To combat this problem, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM in Bremen developed a special coating to be used on the implant posts, known as DentaPlas. This shows to inhibit the growth of bacteria, which allows the implant to properly fuse with the jawbone at an increased rate for more successful results.

The combination of new surface materials features integrated silver nanoparticles in the thin plasma polymer coating, which will dissolve within a few weeks. While healing, small amounts of anti-microbial silver ions are released to target and kill bacteria.

Improved Success of Dental Implants

The new system features three layers of protection: two plasma polymer layers and a center layer of silver. Together, this prevents tissue contact with the silver so there is no risk of toxic exposure. However, the silver ions are still able to penetrate the plasma layer to help the implant integrate with the bone.

Eventually, the silver will become depleted so there is no risk of long-term toxic effects. The post will remain fully biocompatible and sterile to enhance the level of success for the dental implant procedure.

Currently, the posts are only available as trials as more studying and research much be concluded prior to making them widely available. However, preliminary studies have found the new material to be extremely promising when used for modern dental practices.

Benefit from a Complete Smile

As dental implants continue to be the most preferred choice to permanently replace missing teeth, advancements will promote their long-term success. As a permanent solution to treat tooth loss and the only option to stop a decrease in bone density, the new material will further enhance the popularity and success of the procedure.
