What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are very thin layers of tooth-colored dental porcelain or composite resin that are adhesively bonded to the front side of your upper and lower teeth. These dental wonders can be used to cover up a myriad of smile imperfections such as:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Teeth that are fractured or broken
  • Irreversibly stained or discolored teeth
  • Slightly crooked teeth
  • Irregularly spaced teeth or teeth that have wide gaps between them
  • Teeth that are worn because of bruxism or teeth grinding and clenching
  • Misshaped teeth
  • Teeth that are proportionally smaller than other teeth

The Process of Getting Veneers

To find out if you are a qualified candidate for veneers, you’ll need to meet with our cosmetic dentist in Torrance, Dr. Hamzehpour, who will carefully examine your teeth and gums. If they are healthy, then she will begin planning your new smile. While the unique details of your mouth, jaw, and face will most heavily influence the design of your customized veneers, Dr. Hamzehpour will also be glad to consider the characteristics you wish your smile to have. Don’t hesitate to share your preferences for the color, size, and shape of your veneers. Ultimately, the goal of everyone here at Blue Coast Dental Group is to give you a smile that meets all of your expectations.

Receiving your veneers usually requires two appointments. First, Dr. Hamzehpour will administer a local anesthetic so she can prepare your teeth; a minimal amount of enamel will need to be removed so that your veneers lay flush and do not protrude or look unnatural. Once this step is completed, we’ll take an impression of your teeth to create a mold of your mouth. Our cosmetic dental lab will use this mold to fabricate your permanent veneers. While these are made, we’ll give you a set of temporary veneers to wear over your prepared teeth.

In a couple of weeks, your customized veneers will arrive at Blue Coast Dental Group. Dr. Hamzehpour will check each veneer for color, shape, and size. The temporaries will be removed, and your permanent veneers will be cemented into place. Now, when you look in the mirror, you’ll see the perfect smile you’ve always wanted.

The Benefits of Veneers

Veneers are one of the most sought-after cosmetic dental treatments for a reason: they come with a wide array of benefits! Here are a few to consider:

  • They can last for 10+ years with proper care.
  • They are stain-resistant and cavity-resilient.
  • They are completely customized to each patient.
  • They can conceal multiple dental flaws simultaneously.
  • The entire process can be completed in as little as two appointments.

Veneers FAQs

Are Veneers Permanent?

To properly prep the tooth (and ensure the result is flawless), Dr. Hamzehpour will remove a small portion of your enamel. From there, the thin sheets of porcelain are cemented to the teeth to conceal stains, fix minor misalignment, and address other aesthetic flaws. Although the veneers can be removed if it becomes necessary, your teeth will no longer look aesthetically pleasing without them. Therefore, this cosmetic dental treatment is considered permanent.

Will Veneers Match My Other Teeth?

While veneers are known for their ability to completely transform smiles, they can also be used to fix a single tooth. Thanks to modern technology and high-quality porcelain, they can do just that without calling attention to your treatment! After all, each veneer is custom-made for your unique smile. So, if you want it to be the color of your existing enamel or would prefer a lighter shade and match your remaining teeth with a whitening treatment, the result will be seamless.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

With proper care, veneers can last 15+ years! Since good oral habits are crucial to their long lifespan, make sure to brush twice a day, floss daily, and use mouthwash regularly. Also, visit our office every six months for a professional checkup and cleaning. That way, we can ensure your teeth are in tip-top shape, remove stubborn plaque and tartar, and clean the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth.

Will I Need to Change My Diet with Veneers?

Fortunately, patients with veneers don’t need to make drastic changes to their diet to keep them in pristine condition. That being said, there are a few best practices that you should follow to prevent them from breaking, like avoiding hard candy and not chewing on non-food objects (like ice). After all, they are extremely durable; however, even your natural teeth can be damaged by doing so.

What If One of My Veneers Comes Off?

Although rare, one of your veneers can come off. If it does, do your best not to panic. Instead, calmly locate it and contact our office. That way, we can schedule an appointment with Dr. Hamzehpour and mend your smile. Under no circumstance should you attempt to fix it on your own by using a household item, like crazy glue. This can be disastrous for your oral health and damage the veneer irrefutably.

Can Veneers Fix Crooked Teeth?

Actually, yes! Not only that, but they can conceal minor crookedness in just two or three visits (hence why they are sometimes referred to as “instant orthodontics”). So, if you are interested in pursuing a straighter smile, but you don’t want to wear metal braces or wait 2+ years to achieve the results you desire, don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation with us to discuss veneers in Torrance.

What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?

To ensure your veneers don’t feel bulky or protrude unnaturally, we will remove a sliver of enamel. After that, however, your teeth will remain untouched. To keep both them and your veneers in pristine condition moving forward, it’s important to commit to healthy habits, like brushing your teeth each morning and evening for two full minutes.

Can Insurance Cover Veneers?

Usually, dental insurance providers cover treatments that are medically necessary, not ones that are elective. As a result, there’s a good chance that you’ll need to pay for the cost out-of-pocket. The good news is that there are other ways you can make the price more affordable, including flexible financing. At our Torrance dental office, we’re proud to work with CareCredit, which is a trusted third-party financier that offers convenient payment plans (many of which have little-to-no interest attached).

Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?

Yes, you will still be able to drink coffee with veneers. In fact, one of the reasons patients choose this cosmetic dental treatment is because it’s crafted from stain-resistant materials, like dental porcelain. As a result, you don’t have to worry about staining the same way you do with your natural teeth.

Important reminder: Not all of your teeth will be covered with veneers. So, it’s important that you take certain precautions to maintain a bright, seamless appearance, like using a straw.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

That depends on your aesthetic concerns and goals! For instance, if there is a small chip on one of the teeth that shows when you smile, then you may only need one veneer. Conversely, if you desire a completely new look, then we may need 10-12 veneers to create a bright, uniform, and gorgeous grin.

Do Veneers Feel Like Real Teeth?

They do! There are a few reasons we can say this confidently, starting with the fact that the shape and size of each veneer is custom-made for you to ensure that it doesn’t feel bulky or unnatural in any way. They are also crafted from only the best dental materials, like porcelain, which is smooth and won’t irritate the soft tissue in your mouth.

Is There Anyone Who Shouldn’t Get Veneers?

Veneers are not recommended for patients who are struggling with considerable malocclusion, who are suffering from decay, or who have an active infection in their gums. That’s why it’s so important that we complete a comprehensive oral exam! Once we have an in-depth understanding of both your aesthetic concerns and your dental needs, we can discuss how to create the healthy, beautiful smile that you deserve.
