Children's Dentistry - Torrance, CA
Keeping Little Smiles Healthy
Children grow up so quickly. They start out wiggling across the floor, and before you know it, they’re out the door. One day you’re surprised to see their first tooth, and the next they’re smiling back at you as they grab the car keys and head to a friend’s house.
To make sure that their heart melting smile is always healthy, your children need proper pediatric dentistry. In Torrance, family dentist Dr. Sanaz Hamzehpour provides dental services designed especially for children from infancy through the teen years. Establishing a solid foundation of good oral healthcare at a young age is important to a lifetime of healthy smiles.
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, children should see a dentist for the first time on or before their first birthday. This appointment gives Dr. Hamzehpour an opportunity to check the development of your child’s teeth and bite. In addition, she can speak to you about what you should be doing at home to make sure they have healthy teeth and mouths.
For example, children’s teeth need to be brushed and flossed the same as adult teeth. That means brushing twice a day and flossing once. Be sure to use a soft child-sized toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste once they are old enough to spit, which is usually around the age of two or three.
Setting Children on the Path for Great Oral Health
At your children’s regular checkups, we’ll clean their teeth, and Dr. Hamzehpour will conduct a thorough examination. Just because those teeth are so white and new doesn’t mean they are immune to oral health problems! The bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease live in children’s mouths, too. If necessary, we have the correct treatment to repair a little tooth or stop periodontal disease before it can advance.
In addition, Dr. Hamzehpour and the team at Blue Coast Dental Group can also provide fluoride treatments and dental sealants. Both of these are intended to help your child fight tooth decay. With a fluoride treatment, we apply a topical solution to all of the teeth. Left on for a few minutes, fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel, the hard outer surface of every tooth that is there for protection.
Dental sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of your child’s molars. Decay-causing bacteria can easily become trapped in the deep grooves and pits of these teeth and eventually lead to cavities. Dental sealants go on as a clear plastic liquid and dry to a hard finish that helps block bacteria from reaching a tooth’s surface.
