How Can I Tell If There’s a Cavity Between My Teeth?

The American Dental Association estimates that over 91% of Americans over the age of 20 have had a at least one cavity in their life—which is a staggering estimate! However, cavities aren’t always obvious—in fact, they can even form between your teeth. But how are you supposed to know when this happens, and what can you do about it? After all, cavities can be accompanied by some pretty painful consequences! Keep reading to learn more from your dentist about interproximal cavities and some tips for preventing them.

How Can I Tell If There’s a Cavity Between My Teeth?

A cavity between two teeth is called an interproximal cavity, and just like any other type of cavity, it forms when the enamel is worn away and bacteria causes decay. But since they form between your teeth, they can sometimes go unnoticed. However, one of two things might give away its presence:

  • The cavity has penetrated the enamel and reached the second layer of tissue, known as the dentin. This can result in sensitivity to sweets and cold items, as well as discomfort when chewing.
  • Your dentist or dental hygienist spots the cavity during a routine cleaning, typically through a bitewing X-ray.

How Are Interproximal Cavities Treated?

Even though they form in less-obvious spaces, interproximal cavities must still be treated. Fortunately, there are several ways to go about this, though it will depend on the severity of the situation. If the cavity is caught early on and only extends halfway or less into the enamel, it can typically be recalcified with fluoride gel. If it extends slightly further, a filling can typically be used.

However, in severe cases sometimes a root canal might be necessary in order to salvage the tooth. Afterwards, a crown can be placed on the tooth to protect and preserve it. In the most extreme of cases, a tooth extraction can be done to prevent the infection from spreading further—but this is done as a last resort, and the tooth will need to also be replaced.

Helpful Tips for Keeping Your Teeth Free of Cavities

One of the best ways you can protect your smile from cavities, including interproximal cavities, is by practicing good oral hygiene! Consider the following tips:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time.
  • Don’t skip flossing; it’s just as important as brushing and allows you to access the hard-to-reach spaces between your teeth where interproximal cavities form.
  • Limit your consumption of sugary snacks and beverages.
  • Avoid poor dental habits like smoking or using tobacco products.
  • Visit your dentist biannually for checkups and cleanings; these visits allow your dentist to remove the tartar and plaque buildup that leads to cavities!

Interproximal cavities aren’t something that you should ignore—they carry the same consequences as other types of cavities, and are sneakier than them, too. That said, if you suspect you might have an interproximal cavity, don’t hesitate to follow up with your dentist and get the treatment you need.
