If you are one to travel all the time for work or pleasure, then getting any procedure can make you wonder if you need to push back the visit. Many people wonder if dental implants will take them out of commission for a while, especially since replacing missing teeth as soon as possible is beneficial. Here is what you should know!

Is It Safe to Travel After Dental Implant Surgery?

The good news is that flying after getting just one or a few dental implants isn’t generally a concern. That being said, if your treatment was a little more in-depth by requiring multiple placements, bone grafting, or a sinus lift, then it’s best to postpone your travel plans. It’s advised that you wait at least 10 to 14 days before you catch a flight.

What about road trips? If you have a long car ride coming up, then it can be calmer compared to flying. Keep in mind that it can take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours before the dental sedation you received during placement wears off, so you should let someone else take control of the wheel. Also, listen to your body! Rest is important after any procedure, and dental implant placement is no different. You may want to wait a few days after surgery, so you can feel closer to 100% for your journey ahead!

Helpful Tips for Traveling After Dental Implant Surgery

It is possible to start traveling after receiving your dental implants, but there are some things that you should know and consider to make it a bit smoother for you! If you are flying:

  • Choosing an aisle seat can be convenient for you since you get to the lavatory more easily and change your gauze when needed.
  • Before you get on the airplane, get a few bottles of water to stay hydrated.
  • Keep handy some pain relievers and a few small sandwich bags; that way, you can ask the flight attendant to fill them with ice.

If you are heading on the road, then packing some over-the-counter medication can be helpful as well! A pillow and blanket to help you relax can also be nice to have on hand!

Preparing ahead of time and following some of these tips can make your traveling a little easier. If you have any concerns or questions, your dentist will be happy to help you out. Have a safe and happy travels!
