Seamlessly correcting Teeth
A missing tooth or several missing teeth don’t only look unappealing—they also can cause serious consequences for the remaining teeth in your mouth. Just one missing tooth can adversely affect your bite—what we call the occlusion—causing other teeth to drift out of their proper positions, and may even lead to symptoms of a temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD.
But the troubles don’t end in your mouth. Unfortunately, tooth loss can have ramifications that include malnourishment because you’re unable to eat a variety of healthy foods. Plus, the knowledge that others are seeing a large hole in your smile can easily weaken your self-esteem and confidence. For these reasons and more, tooth replacement is always recommended. A crown and bridge, also known as a fixed bridge, is an excellent choice. Dr. Hamzehpour and her team at Blue Coast Dental Group will plan and create a crown and bridge that seamlessly closes the gap in your smile.
As the name suggests, a dental crown and bridge is actually comprised of two parts: there is the false tooth or teeth that bridges the gap in your smile and the dental crowns that are cemented over healthy teeth on either side of the space. A crown and bridge can be made of porcelain fused to metal or only porcelain. Dr. Hamzehpour will decide which material is best for you depending on where the crown and bridge is needed in your mouth.
Receiving a Dental Bridge in Torrance
At your first visit to Blue Coast Dental Group for a crown and bridge, Dr. Hamzehpour will conduct a dental exam to make sure there are no other oral health concerns to address first. She’ll start with X-rays, impressions and a series of photographs that help her design the ideal prosthetic.
With this plan in mind, Dr. Hamzehpour first gives you a local anesthetic so she can painlessly prepare the teeth that will be outfitted with crowns to support the bridge. The size of these teeth will need to be reduced slightly so the crowns fit comfortably. If either of these teeth are unhealthy, Dr. Hamzehpour may elect to build them up or replace them with dental implants.
Next, she’ll take an impression of your prepared teeth. Our dental lab will use this model to fabricate your permanent crown and bridge. While this is done, she’ll give you a temporary prosthetic to wear so your prepared teeth will not be exposed. When your custom-fitted crown and bridge is ready, you’ll return to Blue Coast Dental Group so she can cement it in place.
Caring for your crown and bridge mostly requires the same oral hygiene you provide your natural teeth. Brush at least twice a day and floss once. To floss underneath the bridge, we’ll give you a special bridge floss threader. Flossing between the prosthetic teeth and your underlying gums is important so you can avoid plaque and bacteria accumulation.
